Generally I stay away from fungi. But, on this particular sunny spring day, there was something special about the play of the sun and the shadows that drew me closer. Much closer. I had to put my face about 3 inches from the thing to snap this picture. I was so close in fact that people came over to see what the hell I was doing lying on my back on the library lawn with my face buried in a big tree fungus.
The point is: I know that there is beauty to be found in every day, and there’s beauty almost everywhere, if we choose to see it. And, I know from experience, that it’s so much easier to see the downside (especially with 5 decades of practice doing so).
Sure, fungi are smelly and slimy, but in a certain light they’re just the opposite, not to mention that the non-poisonous ones can be quite tasty! At 53 I’m finally just starting to learn that most of life is like that. I just hope that the kind people around me won’t lose patience with me before I fully learn this, one of life’s most important lessons.
