Like a Flower in Winter

When I was out walking the dog this morning I saw this plant standing tall above the dusting of snow that fell this week. It’s December 15th. It’s 10 days before Christmas. It’s 36 degrees outside (Fahrenheit, that is).

I thought: What kind of a plant tries to grow in winter? Does it really think that it stands a chance of blossoming in this unforgiving environment? Doesn’t it know that summer is over? Doesn’t it know that it’s time to step aside, and to rest now. Isn’t it being a bit selfish by depleting the soil of valuable nutrients that could be put to better use supporting the fresh, strong flowers of spring?

Then, I realized that the same could be said about me. What a humbling thought.

I’m glad I saw the winter flower. It didn’t need to blossom. Just the fact that it tried brightened what started out as a very bleak day. Now, I’ve decided to be like the winter flower. I may not blossom, but I’ll try pretty damn hard. And, I’m going to try my best to brighten the days of others in the process!
